Bed Bath & Beyond Is Bankrupt. But You Can Still Use Its Coupons.

We've heard reports that regional retailers like Boscov's have offered to accept Bed Bath & Beyond coupons as well. The quality of these deals may vary depending on the location, but it may be a welcome bonus if you're already a regular customer. Check out our Deals page for more great discounts on Wirecutter's expert-approved picks.

Bed Bath & Beyond is shutting its doors after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, marking the end of an era for coupon clippers everywhere. Once upon a time, Bed Bath & Beyond’s storied, oversized “Big Blue” coupons could be found in every mailbox, circular, and email inbox, but now Bed, Bath & Beyond has stopped accepting them. A few other retailers have stepped in to snag sales away from BB&B’s liquidation, though. Our Deals team dug in to see what’s worth it.

The Container Store said it would offer 20% off a single item “for customers who bring a competitor’s blue coupon to any store location” through Wednesday, May 31. However, some conditions apply: You can’t use the coupon for store-pickup orders, on products from certain brands, or combined with other sales or offers from The Container Store, and The Container Store won’t accept expired coupons (a common allowance at Bed Bath & Beyond’s brick-and-mortar stores).

Big Lots also issued a press release saying that it would honor all Bed Bath & Beyond coupons—even those that are expired. The furniture and home decor retailer offered to “exchang[e] all expired Bed Bath & Beyond coupons presented at any Big Lots store” through Sunday, May 7, adding that “[a]ny shopper presenting any Bed Bath & Beyond coupon will receive 20% off their entire purchase of $50 or more.”

Dig through your wallet for any unredeemed gift cards. You can use them at Bed Bath & Beyond until May 8, and you can return eligible purchases through the close of business on May 24. If you still have Welcome Rewards points, you can redeem them to obtain extra discounts (without the option of earning additional points) until May 15.

If you’re planning to shop the liquidation sale, remember that if you are dissatisfied with your purchase, your only recourse will be a manufacturer warranty or an extended warranty if your credit card company provides it.

These offerings from The Container Store and Big Lots are a nice gesture toward Bed Bath & Beyond customers who may be feeling left in the lurch. But unfortunately, that’s about as much value as they hold.

The Container Store commonly runs some kind of sales promotion of its own, so although this new coupon clause can be a solid backup if an item you need isn’t otherwise discounted, you probably won’t score an amazing deal. Big Lots can be relatively hit-or-miss in terms of each store’s offerings, depending on season and location, so your mileage may similarly vary. Some of the products available for purchase on the Big Lots website are also available at its physical stores, but just as some merchandise is exclusively sold online (where the Bed Bath & Beyond coupons don’t apply), the same can apply to items sold in-store.

As noted, plenty of sales are on offer at The Container Store without the blue coupon. Although these lower prices may not be up to our rigorous Wirecutter Deals standards, we support a discount that allows you to keep a little extra cash in your pocket if it's an item you need and can't wait until a better deal is available. Here are a few of our favorite Wirecutter picks sold by the company.
